If you love shopping at Yarn Garden but hate how crowded it gets, maybe you should check out Abundant Yarn. They have a huge store, full of yarn, lots of lovely, gorgeous, and throughly abundant though expensive yarn. They have an excellent selection of silk and silk blends like Fiesta's La Luz and Lorna's Laces Lion & Lamb. It appears to be targeting higher-end shoppers; I don't recall seeing Brown Sheep or other lower-cost wools. In fact, I don't believe they carry Manos del Uruguay. They appear to have very little sock yarn, and no baby yarn, and the superwash yarns are segregated into their own dark corner. While the website lists Encore, I was not able to find any on the floor.
They have a cafe that serves Stumptown Coffee that is quite sunny and cheerful, and has WiFi.

Thanks for all the kind words - but I wanted to add that we do carry yarns for all price ranges. We have every color of Cascade 220 (over 280 of them!), and 45 colors of Plymouth Encore. We also carry a different brand of hand-spun, kettle-dyed yarn from a cooperative in Uruguay called Rio de la Plata. As for sock yarn we have 60 colors of Trekking, Lorna's Laces, Bearfoot, Silk Soxie, Meilenweit, Claudias and every color of sock reinforcing yarn made. There is also about 60 different kinds of baby yarn. So for those of you looking for this type of stuff I just wanted to add this list.
I hope you come visit soon - we are on the 70 bus line about 5 streets south of Tacoma in Sellwood.
I just visited this shop for the first time last weekend, and it's a really nice store. Their starting inventory might have been different but they've got an awful lot of Cascade 220 now. They also carry the Louet Gems line as well as a bunch of other sock yarns - and I've found Trekking just about impossible to find elsewhere in Portland.
This is shop is also the only source of prepared-for-dyeing yarn that I know of around Portland.
This is a great shop with a very friendly staff. They usually have excellent sale yarn, some of the best selections I've seen in Portland. I like going to this shop when I know I have some time to enjoy browsing at all the yarns and books. The open space and inviting atmosphere always offer up a relaxing Saturday afternoon.
I've become addicted to this yarn shop. The staff is friendly and helpful, their yarns are not cheap, but no yarn "boutiques" have cheaply priced yarns, really. Their cafe is lovely and filled with light with friendly staff and patrons. I highly recommend it. I try to go there every chance I get and I live in Beaverton.
On top of all the fabulous yarn, it is the only place outside of Yamhill Co. where I can find natural dyes, mordants and they have a huge selection of Henry's Attic natural yarns that they will order for your dyeing project. I needed some ingredient (spectralite? I can't remember) for a class I was teaching and discovered almost too late that I was out. I stopped by this shop on the off chance they would have it and VOILA! they saved the day. I hope they continue to carry the dyestuff.
I love the yarn, love the large space, and I don't like the staff at all.
This is one of the snobbiest yarn shops in Portland. So disappointing.
I asked about this cute hat pattern that had a knitted sample and I was told (while this woman looked down her nose at me) that the yarn that the pattern was written for cost $30/skein.
Yes, too much, but I may have bought it anyway if the haughty attitude had been missing. Unfortunately, *most* of the women I encountered (4) were dismissive and cool. The enthusiastic male staff is friendlier and I prefer dealing with them.
Luckily the nice guy behind the counter sold me the pattern and I took my business elsewhere to buy the yarn. I've been back once more, but in general, the staff is so holier-than-thou that I can barely stand to go in there... very disappointing given the spacious areas to knit and delicious selection.
The review is VERY out of date as there has been new ownership for a year and many wonderful changes. I have been a very happy customer from the beginning - and am quite surprised at the story about snobby staff. The staff have always been totally awesome in my experience - from the beginning through my stop there today.
I think the snobby staff went away with the prior owner. My most recent experience involved helpful and enthusiastic staff - in addition to beautiful yarns. The inventory has become far more extensive and on certain days the parking lot is full with other knitters who are as passionate about this hobby as I am. This store has become one of my favorites.
