Portland: Most Chill City
There's an article today in the InPortland section of the Oregonian called Have a Cocktail, You're in the City that Chills. A liquor brand has called us "Most Chill City". We've edged out SF and Las Vegas.
Among the reasons: the sheer number of places to chill—bars, restaurants, coffeehouses, parks; commute time (less commuting, more chilling); and mild weather. But what pushed us over the top: the high percentage of, you guessed it, 25- to 34-year-olds. The college-educated of them already get touted as the economic salvation for cities. Now they're the darlings of Fifth Avenue. That makes Portland a marketing hot zone, fuels our hip gestalt and further confirms that this youngish adult demographic is a new breed with money to blow....
CEOs for Cities ... helped pinpoint the college-educated 25- to 34-year-olds as the fuel in the knowledge-based world with Portland economist Joe Cortright's 2005 study. These are the Young Creatives—smart, innovative and entrepreneurial. They're not only sought after by companies, they start their own.Now newer CEOs for Cities data say two-thirds of yo-creas choose where to live before worrying about a job.
However, those young creatives (I am not going to say yo-creas, how stoopid is that. Ugh.) also find (some not too surprising) fault with Portland. Like the lack of racial diversity, the lack of ambition, the lack of affordability, and the flagging school system.
